"In the beginning God
created the heavens and the earth."
(Genesis 1:1)
"Then God said, 'Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our
likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the
birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over
every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.' So God created
man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and
female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to
them, 'Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have
dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over
every living thing that moves on the earth.' And God said, 'See,
I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of
all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields see; to you it shall
be for food. Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of
the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is
life, I have given every green herb for food' and it was so. Then
God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good ..."
(Genesis 1:26-31)
"Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth,
and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil
continually. And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the
earth, and He was grieved in His heart. So the Lord said, 'I will
destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man
and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I
have made them.' But Noah found grace in the eyes of the
Lord. This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man,
perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God. And Noah
begot three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. The earth also was
corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. So
God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had
corrupted their way on the earth. And God said to Noah, 'The end
of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence
through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
Make for yourself an ark of gopherwood ...' "
(Genesis 6:5-14)
" 'And behold, I Myself am bringing floodwaters on the earth, to
destroy from under heaven all flesh in which the breath of life;
everything that is on the earth shall die. But I will establish
My covenant with you; and you shall go into the ark - you, your sons,
your wife, and your sons' wives with you. And of every living
thing of all flesh you shall bring two of every sort into the ark, to
keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female."
(Genesis 6:17-19)
"... on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up,
and the windows of heaven were opened. And the rain was on the
earth forty days and forty nights."
(Genesis 7:11-12)
"And the waters prevailed on the earth one hundred and fifty
days. Then God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all
the animals that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind to
pass over the earth, and the waters subsided. The fountains of
the deep and the windows of heaven were also stopped, and the rain from
heaven was restrained. And the waters receded continually from
the earth. At the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters
decreased. Then the ark rested in the seventh month, the
seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat."
(Genesis 7:24 - Genesis 8:4)
"Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him saying: 'And as for
Me, behold I establish My covenant with you and with your descendants
after you, and with every living creature that is with you: the birds,
the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you, of all that go out
of the ark, every beast of the earth. Thus I establish My
covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters
of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the
earth.' And God said: 'This is the sign of the covenant which I
make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you,
for perpetual generations: I set My rainbow in the cloud; and it shall
be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.' "
(Genesis 9:8-13)
"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes my to lie
down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He
restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His
name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow
of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your
staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the
presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs
over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of
my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever."
(Psalm 23:1-6)
"Dishonest scales are an abomination to the Lord. But a just
weight is His delight. When pride comes, then comes shame; But
with the humble is wisdom. The integrity of the upright will
guide them, But the perversity of the unfaithful will destroy
them. Riches do not profit in the day of wrath. But
righteousness delivers from death. The righteousness of the
blameless will direct his way aright, But the wicked will fall by his
won wickedness. The Righteousness of the upright will delivery
them, But the unfaithful will be caught by their lust."
(Proverbs 11:1-6)
"Who had believed our report? And whom has the arm of the Lord
been revealed? for He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,
And as a root out of the dry ground. He has no form or
comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should
desire Him. He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows
and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from
Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely He has
borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our
transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for
our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. All we
like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. He was
oppressed and He was afflicted. Yet He opened not His mouth; He
was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers
is silent, So He opened not His mouth. He was taken from prison
and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He
was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My
people He was stricken."
(The
prophesy of the punishment and death of Jesus for the forgiveness of
our sins as found in Isaiah 53:1-8)
"Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a
city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose
name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was
Mary. And having come in, the angel said to her, 'Rejoice, highly
favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are
you among women!' But when she saw him, she was troubled at his
saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. Then the angel
said to her, 'Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with
God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring
forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. He
will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord
God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign
over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no
end.' Then Mary said to the angel, 'How can this be, since I do not
know a man?' And the angel answered and said to her, 'The Holy
Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow
you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called
the Son of God. Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived
a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was
called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible.' Then Mary
said, 'Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to
your word.' And the angel departed from her."
(Luke 1:26-38)
Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by
him. And John tried to prevent Him, saying, 'I need to be
baptized by You, and are You coming to me?' But Jesus answered and said
to him, 'Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us
to fulfill all righteousness.' Then he allowed Him. When He had been
baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the
heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending
like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly
a voice came from heaven, saying, 'This
is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.' "
(Matthew 3:13-17
NOTE: The words of our Lord Jesus are in green.)
"And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when
He was seated His disciples came to Him. Then He opened His mouth and
taught them, saying:
' Blessed are the poor in spirit,
For theirs is the kingdom of
heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
For they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
For they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for
righteousness,
For they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
For they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
For they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
For they shall be called sons of
God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for
righteousness’ sake,
For theirs is the kingdom of
heaven.
Blessed are you
when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against
you falsely for My sake. 12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is
your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were
before you.
You are the salt of
the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned?
It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot
by men.
“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill
cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a
basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are
in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may
see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I
did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to
you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no
means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. Whoever therefore
breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so,
shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and
teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of
heaven. For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the
righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means
enter the kingdom of heaven.
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, *You shall
not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.*
But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause
shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother,
*Raca!* shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, *You
fool!* shall be in danger of hell fire. Therefore if you bring your
gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something
against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way.
First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him,
lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, the judge hand you over
to the officer, and you be thrown into prison. Assuredly, I
say to you, you will by no means get out of there till you have paid
the last penny.
You have heard that it was said to those of old, *You shall not
commit adultery.* But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to
lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If
your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from
you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish,
than for your whole body to be cast into hell. And if your right hand
causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is
more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your
whole body to be cast into hell.
Furthermore it has been said, *Whoever divorces his wife, let him give
her a certificate of divorce.* But I say to you that whoever divorces
his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit
adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.
Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, *You shall not
swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.* But I say to
you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne;
nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is
the city of the great King. Nor shall you swear by your head, because
you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your ‘Yes’ be
‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the
evil one.
You have heard that it was said, *An eye for an eye and a tooth for
a tooth.* But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever
slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone
wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your
cloak also. And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.
Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do
not turn away.
You have heard that it was said, *You shall love your neighbor
and hate your enemy.* But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those
who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who
spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your
Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the
good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love
those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax
collectors do the same? And if you greet your brethren only, what do
you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so?
Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is
perfect.' "
