OUR STORY
and HOW WE DID IT
Jim was born in 1955 and Marsha in 1957 and were married in 1975.
We're normal Americans who (through childbirth, aging, pizza, pasta,
soda pop, fast foods, chicken wings and lack of exercise) started out
young and thin and ended up older, fat and flabby. Marsha began
having serious problems with Rheumatoid Arthritis in 2001. The
damage attacked her joints quickly, especially her knees, and caused
her to have to start using a cane to walk, then a walker became
necessary and finally we were shopping for a wheelchair because she
could no longer hold herself up using the walker because the arthritis
had destroyed much of her wrist joints.
She had successful total knee replacement surgery on both knees in
2004, but the surgeon warned that if she didn't loose weight her new
knees wouldn't last long. She tried a couple of diet fads with
little results. Her worst enemy was JIM who was not partnering
with her in the weight loss. So let's get to Jim... While
all of this was going on with Marsha, Jim was working as a
manufacturing manager (as he has been doing forever), sitting in
meetings and at his desk, crunching numbers, and working long hours
with no time for much else but eating and sleeping. Jim was
getting fatter and fatter.
Want to know how things can come back to bite you? Jim had a part
time job at a clothing store in the mall while in high school that
turned into a full time management position when we first got
married. As a young "wise guy" when the mall was about to close
and the customers had cleared out, Jim would sometimes slip into a size
50 suit coat off the rack and laugh his tail off as he joked around
with the other employees about the "fat guys" wo came into the
store. Those size 50 waist pants were another popular "Jim toy"
to wave around. All fun and games when you're 17 years old and
have a 28" waist. Fast forward to 2007 and we find Jim at 299
pounds having moved from size 42", to 44" , to 46", to 48" waist pants
since 2001 and now those size 48" pants were straining at the seams and
about to burst at the zipper. Jim NEEDED those size 50" waist
pants of which he used to laugh so hard.
Jim and Marsha decided it was time to GET TOUGH and make a life
change. Television in the fourth quarter of 2006 was peppered
with ads for weight loss programs... You know... The ones
that mail you their food each month. Their commercials were very
convincing and we decided to jump in and commit to it to loose the
weight. We did and it worked! Then we jumped out of it just
a couple of months later because the program cost us about $600 per
month PLUS all of the extra stuff we had to buy at the grocery to go
with the program nutrition plan. We just couldn't afford it.
Jim began to study the purchased plan's nutrition information.
Being an engineer and a statistics guy, Jim started to create
spreadsheets with this nutrition data and collecting data from readily
available products in the grocery store aisles. The same day we
dropped the commercial nutrition program, we started the plan that Jim
created. Then we waited. Then we watched. Then we
worried. Then we wondered if we had just thrown away the progress
that we had made in those couple of months on the commercial
program. But guess what... Jim's program WORKED just as
well as the commercial program! Look again at the BEFORE and
AFTER photos above. That's 2 months of the commercial nutrition
plan and 10 months of Jim's plan. And the weight loss
continues. Jim reached his goal of weighing 175 US pounds in less
than 2 years and Marsha continues to loose weight on the plan.
